Something I’ve noticed over the past few years:
No one really knows what they’re doing.
It’s easy to look around and admire the people that have it all figured out. They seem so confident in themselves, almost like they know something we don’t.
While they may be further along in their life journey, they aren’t some anomalies who were dealt a lucky hand. From my experience, they are just as lost as the rest of us; not knowing if they made the right choices, having constant doubts, being stressed out from work, etc. Yet from the outside, you don’t notice these things.
I find myself comparing my situation to the lives of others, which has a negative impact on my self-image. I have this preconceived notion that I’m the only one experiencing the things I’m experiencing.
An example that comes to mind is my career. I’ve been contemplating which avenue I want to go down, each of which could have vastly different outcomes. And since work comprises so much of my life, it’s quite an important decision.
This leads to feelings of uncertainty, which can spiral if not kept under control. But I often forget that my friends and classmates are surely experiencing the same thing. Not just that, but people around the world struggle with the same uncertainties, even if it’s not obvious from an outside perspective.
This is why I’ve found it so important to 1.) Never judge someone from the outside; Assume they know something you don’t, and 2.) No one really knows what they’re doing. They may give off that impression, but we’re all human at the end of the day.
So, I encourage you, dear reader, to not isolate yourselves in feelings of uncertainty, nor to idolize others because you think they have everything figured out. There is no objective benchmark on where you should be in life, so why compare it to others?
Exciting news (at least for me):
I've been revamping The Hemingway Post website for the past week or so, and I think it’s looking pretty clean. There are some new webpages that I’ll be adding to in coming months, including:
Book and movie recommendations, research papers I write or find interesting, cool updates in the artificial intelligence sphere, and faith resources like Bible study and verses.
My goal is to write about things that are truly important to me. I want to create a place where all these things can be housed and easily accessible, hence the creation of the website. Check it out by following the link below! (Keep in mind it’s still in the works).
Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way.
God bless,
Trevor
