Something I’m not great at is taking my own advice.

It seems much easier to help a friend, family member, or even a stranger when compared to myself. But why is that?

I think it’s because we have subjective view of ourselves and our life circumstances. In other words, we aren’t great judges of ourselves.

And this can be beneficial or detrimental:

Beneficial because it can lead to confidence in everyday life and situational intelligence. When we know ourselves well, we can avoid things that are clearly bad for us and partake in things that build us up.

In many cases, it’s important to have a subjective view of things. One example is describing your preferences. We all have different preferences that are specific to our personal circumstances and goals and are most of the time naturally subjective.

Yet subjectivity can also be a pitfall. For example, I’ve dealt with depression starting in my late teens. This has taken a negative toll on my self-image, meaning I began to see myself as lesser because of the subjective view I have of myself.

I’m in a much better place now, but this is a strong example of the dangers of subjectivity.

So…why does this matter?

I think it matters because we need an objective point of view in many situations. We are naturally biased towards our internal desires and need close people in our lives to give us the truth, even when we don’t want to hear it.

Here’s a mental exercise I’m going to focus on this week when making decisions or shifting perspectives:

Act like your giving advice to someone else instead of yourself when you're making a decision or forming a perspective on something.

I recommend trying it out this week. Let me know how it goes!

Exciting Announcement

I started creating a website for those curious about or interested in the Christian faith. If you happen to fall into this category, I would love for you to go check it out. It’s a work in progress, but the message of the Gospel is clearly presented, and I’m proud of how it turned out so far.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated, so I can better cater towards the people who would actually use the site. Reach out at: [email protected] with any questions, comments, or concerns.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s post. The message was kind of all over the place, but I hope you found some value in it.

Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way.

God bless,

Trevor
