There’s been a verse on my mind lately that I want to share with you:
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33 ESV
It comes after a section of Scripture where Jesus says not to be anxious about your life. He explains that worrying about what you will eat, drink, or wear is of little value. God knows you need these things, and He will always provide when you seek Him above all else.
This leads me to ask myself: “Am I putting God above all else?”
In one sense, absolutely. Jesus is my number one priority in life, and that isn’t going to change.
However, I still fall short so often and do things which contradict his beautiful teachings. I still worry about what I’m going to do in my career and how I’m going to deal with certain situations. I worry I’m constantly making mistakes or that I’m being too lazy.
When these things happen, I’m choosing to prioritize anxiety over Jesus. I’m not seeking him first above all else.
And this is a problem. When I don’t worry about everything I’m doing, when I trust that God will provide, I can pursue Him with confidence and clarity.
I’ve had seasons in my life where this especially rings true, and those are the moments I feel closest to the Lord. I’m basically saying, “Hey God, I’m going to focus only on You and trust that You will make everything else fall into place.”
This is true freedom, and it’s something I’m constantly pursuing. God already knows the things I need, all I have to do is trust Him.
To wrap things up, I would love for you to read the full section of Scripture that leads up to Matthew 6:33.
Even if you aren’t a believer yet, I think you will find great wisdom in Jesus’ words:
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:25-33 ESV
Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way.
God bless,
Trevor
