Stillness

In partnership with

The school year has started.

For me, that means going to class, doing homework, and studying for exams on top of my other responsibilities.

As I reflect on my first week of classes, I realize the lack of silent time where I could calm my mind and be present. Given all the stuff that needs to be done, this lack of time makes sense, right?

And I’m willing to bet you’re the same way… Rarely do people complain about how much extra free time they have.

Although it benefits me to keep busy, the older I get the more I value stillness, which I define as ‘moments of content aloneness.’

I find that on busy days when I go to school, exercise, work, and balance other responsibilities, making time for myself is vital.

And that’s the key to stillness: You can’t just find time, you have to make time.

It’s the same with everything else. Finding 5 minutes here or 10 minutes to sit down and reset can be beneficial, but chances are you will be inconsistent. Instead, you have to be intentional and block out time for it.

To do this, I started waking up earlier while most others were still asleep. This limits distractions and creates an environment that nurtures stillness before the action-packed events of the day.

I use this time to read my Bible, pray, and build my relationship with God. You can absolutely do the same, or you may choose to go on a run, listen to music, meditate, or play an instrument. Maybe you choose to wake up earlier, or maybe later at night.

The point is this: Make some time for yourself to be calm, be still, and do something you genuinely enjoy doing. It’s easy to get caught up in life’s events, problems, and responsibilities, and that makes this silent time that much more important.

I haven’t been great at making time for stillness in my life. But hey, if I’ve learned anything in my life it’s this:

There’s always room for improvement.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s post. If you want to go more in-depth on this topic, I recommend Ryan Holiday’s book called “Stillness is the Key.”

Til next time,
